The United States Preventive Services Task Force published a report[1] on Monday September 14, 2015 recommending the use of low levels of aspirin to combat colorectal cancer, and also cardiovascular disease.

The report is unprecedented because it is a the first time a major American medical organization has recommended the use of aspirin in treating cancer. Department of Health and Human Services appointed the independent panel of experts on the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force to analyze scientific literature concerning the use of aspirin’s impact of health outcomes.

The meta-analysis of reviewed data from 11 trials that were selected from 3,396 abstracts and 65 articles that met inclusion and quality criteria. The studies were selected from MEDLINE, PubMed, and the Cochrane Collaboration Registry of Controlled Trials.

The study concluded that the use of aspirin lowers colorectal cancer risk, which supported the task force’s recommendation to use aspirin to combat the cancer.

The recommendation would have its greatest positive impact on people age 50-59. The use of aspirin had a weaker effect on people ages 60-69 and the results were inconclusive for people under 50 and 70 and above.[2]

The recommendation was met with with criticism by some medical experts. People who are healthy could suffer from the harmful effects of aspirin’s extended use that include bleeding in the stomach and brain.

Dr. Steven Nissen, the chairman of cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic, said:

The task force “has gotten it wrong,” and “…we can’t afford to get this wrong, because it affects tens of millions of Americans.”

The task force didn’t get it wrong, aspirin can be used to treat and prevent colorectal cancer and also cardiovascular disease. The issue at hand is that too many people are programmed to look for help in drugs first when they should look for the original sources of aspirin, which are plants.

Aspirin was first extracted from the bark of the willow tree, which was used to make the concentrated synthetic form found in medicine. Extracting and making the synthetic compound, removes the aspirin from the nutrients and phytonutrients it was packaged with that controlled its digestion, which makes its prolonged use harmful.

Consuming a whole food plant-based diet or a diet high in fruits and plants saturates the body with natural aspirin that doesn’t harm the body, and protects the body from inflammation that leads to colorectal cancer, other forms of cancer, and cardiovascular disease.

Aspirin is widely distributed throughout the plant kingdom. Check here to to find out more about aspirin in plants.
