Gut Bacteria

The balance of good to bad gut bacteria determines the course of our health. The consumption of alkaline plant foods supports the dominance of good gut bacteria.  The consumption of meat, dairy, and processed foods supports the dominance of bad bacteria.

Consuming of meat, dairy, and processed foods significantly increases the level of the toxic compound Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) in the blood. High levels of TMAO is associated with significant increases of the risk of stroke or heart attack.

The bad bacteria in the gut turns carnitine found in meat, energy drink and supplements into TMAO. It also turns choline found in eggs into TMAO.

Participants in this study[1] who ate a plant based diet had practically no TMAO in their bodies. Eating a plant based diet significantly promoted the balance of gut bacteria in favor of good bacteria.

The plant based diet was so protective that the participants who ate a plant based diet produced almost no TMAO when fed a steak.

Their plant based practically eliminated the bacteria that fed on steak and produced TMAO. This does not mean it is safe to start consuming a lot of meat, eggs, and processed foods.

The plant based environment in the gut will protect against production of TMAO, but frequent consumption of meat, eggs, and processed foods will lead to the reestablishment of TMAO in the body.
