Effect Of High Animal Protein Diets During Pregnancy

The following study reminds me of the Tuskegee experiments where black men who had syphilis were left untreated without their knowledge so the Public Health Service could study the natural history of syphilis.

Only poor black women were eligible for this 1976 Harlem trial, though protein was assumed to be deficient in the diets of poor people in general.

One could question why only poor black women were eligible for the study. Also, if the researchers had analyzed the diets of poor people they would have known that their diets weren’t protein deficient but were calorie deficient.

The target audience couldn’t afford to eat enough food to satisfy calorie intake recommendations, but consumed enough protein.

The results weren’t good for the test group who were fed an extra 40 grams of animal protein daily.[1] This group suffered an excess of premature births and associated neonatal deaths. There was also growth retardation up to 37 months in the surviving babies.

There was also an association with women who had a high intake of animal protein during pregnancy and the increased risk of the children being overweight, especially for the female children.

This may be due to the continuation of the same eating habits.

Dr. Greger covers the role animal protein consumption during pregnancy in the video.
