A new study about omega-3 supplements published on August, 25, 2015 in The Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that oral supplementation by elder people had no statistically significant effect on cognitive function.

Emily Y. Chew, MD and her associates designed the study where 3741 subjects participated in a ancillary cognitive function study, and 3501 of the 3741 subjects underwent cognitive function testing over a five year period. The average age of the participants was 72.7 years and 57.5% were women.

Omega-3 supplements do not support brain function but omega-3 in whole foods do. Chew said a much better bet for all-around brain and heart health is eating foods naturally high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, flaxseed and walnuts.[2]
