Relieve Migraines With Ginger Root

People have used ginger in traditional medicine to successfully treat migraines, which lead researchers to perform scientific studies on ginger.

Case studies have shown ginger to be effective in relieving migraines. This case showed participants were able to get rid of their migraines within half hour of its onset by consuming a quarter teaspoon of ginger powder in water.[1]

Case studies led researchers to test ginger’s ability to treat migraines in more stringent clinical trials. A double-blinded randomized clinical trial compared ginger against leading migraine drug sumatriptan.

The trial used only one-eighth teaspoon of ground ginger (250mg) to 50mg of sumatriptan. Ginger performed just as well as the pharmaceutical drug.

88% percent of the ginger group were satisfied, compared to 86% in the sumatriptan group. The real benefit of of ginger compared to the drug is ginger presented with relatively little side effects.

Only 4% of the ginger group complained of side-effects compared to the sumatriptan group. The small percentage of side-effects in the ginger group were slight upset stomach.

80% of the sumatriptan group complained of dizziness, vertigo, heartburn, and a sedative effect.
