The Magnificient Monarchs

The annual migration of the monarch butterfly is on of nature’s most magnificent sights. Every year millions of monarch butterflies make a 3000 mile trip from as far as Nova Scotia to Mexico.

This a phenomenon scientists are still trying to figure out because the butterflies will know how to get all the way to their wintering grounds in the forests of Mexico without every being their before.

On top of that it takes 4 generations of monarch butterflies to complete the trip and each generation of butterflies will know how to continue the trip.

The disturbing thing is the number of monarch butterflies that are making the trip are getting smaller and smaller each year.

This is being primarily blamed on the loss of milkweed which is the monarch caterpillar’s natural source of food.

GMO and herbicide resistant crops are being blamed for the loss of milkweed because the herbicides used to protect the GMO crops are severely killing off milkweed.

Monarch numbers have be on the decline for the last 15 years with the decline in the last few years being the most drastic.

Average monarch coverage of the forests in Mexico form 1994-2014 was 6.39 hectares, but the 2013-2014 numbers was only 0.67 hectares which is 10 time lower than the average coverage.
