The lemon detox diet consists of only drinking a lemon water detox drink and taking laxatives. The lemon detox diet, which is also known as “The Master Cleanse” or “Master Cleanse Diet,” was made by Stanley Burroughs in the 1940’s and was used successfully to cure stomach ulcers.

It also had the side effect of producing weight loss, and it was made popular for this reason because Peter Glickman cited the cleanse in his book, “Lose Weight, Have More Energy and Be Happier in 10 Days.”

The book emphasized a quick turn around in weight loss, energy, and emotional happiness. There are no long-term quick fixes when it comes to health. There are jump-starters, but no quick fixes. Fixes in one’s health have to be lifestyle changes, but we can definitely use jump-starters like the lemon detox diet to get us moving along.

Lemon Detox Diet Plan

The original “lemon detox diet” was designed as a ten day fast that consisted of a minimum of 6 glasses of lemon water that included the following ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons of lemon or lime
  • 2 tablespoons of genuine maple syrup
  • 1/10 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 10 oz. water

The diet also calls for a laxative to be taken in the morning and the evening to help move waste out of the intestines that is already there.

Lemon Detox Diet – Weight Loss

Analyzing the lemon detox diet I have to say it is little more than a water fast, and water fasts are excellent.

During a “water detox” you are not eating and you are providing your body with a minimal amount of nutrients from the small amounts of lemon or lime juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper. This forces the body to burn the stored fat in the body for energy which results in weight loss. You will also lose weight from excreting the waste that was still in the intestines.

The lemon detox diet does offer some carbohydrates from the maple sugar and that are quickly used up. This is why people lose weight while they are on a “lemon detox diet”, which they would also do if they were on a water diet for ten days.

Lemon Detox Diet – Detox

The water part of the lemon detox diet also plays a bigger part in its ability to detox the body, than the other ingredients. Not eating stops more toxins from coming into the body and allows the body to focus on eliminating the toxins that are already present.

Many of us don’t drink enough water and are dehydrated to some level and the the new ratio of water from the lemon detox diet entering the body helps to dilute the toxins in the bloodstream and helps the liver and kidneys process the toxins more efficiently.

Role Of Lemon Or Lime, Maple Syrup, And Cayenne Pepper

The lemon or lime alkalizes the body which supports the immune system and wakes up dormant white bloods cells that had been immobilized by an acidic environment. Dr. Vega’s video shows how an alkaline environment rejuvenates white blood cells so they can clear the body of toxins.

Lemon juice also helps the digestive process by fighting off the H. pylori bacteria which contributes to ulcers.

Maple syrup provides energy in the form of carbohydrates and provides manganese and zinc to support the immune system.

Cayenne pepper burns energy raising body temperature, and increases metabolism and both assist weight loss.

Lemon Detox Diet Benefits

The majority of the weight loss gained is from the water fast part of the lemon detox diet. Toxins are flushed out of the body because you are drinking a lot of water and you are not eating food to bring more toxins into the body.

The lemon or lime, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper do offer some benefits but they majority of weight loss and toxin elimination is due to not eating and drinking a lot of water.

The “lemon detox diet” is not a means to and end. The fast doesn’t effectively deal with waste impacted on the walls of the intestines that need more than a water fast to remove. This waste dumps toxins right back into the body.

The body need fiber to keep the intestines clean and processed foods and meats, and dairy lack fiber and contribute to the buildup of fat and toxins in the body.

A lemon detox diet should be only used as a short term diet because it lacks many of the nutrients needed to support healthy living. A “lemon detox diet” can be used to jumpstart a healthier long term diet that should consist of a majority of vegetables, fruits, nuts, and legumes.

A short-term lemon detox diet can be used along with a longterm plant based diet as a permanent detox solution to support healthy living.
