The knock on marijuana is the plant’s psychoactive effects, and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the major contributor. THC has psychoactive properties but its base or precursor form Tetrahydrocannabinol Acid (THCA) does not have psychoactive properties. THCA becomes THC when THCA goes through a process called decarboxylation. This process strips the THCA of carbon dioxide (CO2) and turns it into THC.

Decarboxylation occurs when the THCA is heated, which happens when marijuana is smoked. Decarboxylation also happens on a smaller scale when the marijuana plant ages. Not only do the THC cannabinoids become decarboxylated when heated, so do the other cannabinoid compounds found in the marijuana plant. Though the other cannabinoid compounds become decarboxylated when heated, the majority of the plants psychoactive activity is still found in the THC compound.

The precursor forms of the cannabinoids are classified as acids and their abbreviations end with the letter “A” as indicated in the diagram: THCA, CBDA, CBGA, and CBCA. The precursor forms also have medicinal properties so you don’t need to smoke marijuana to experience the medicinal benefits of marijuana.

The true benefits of marijuana are realized when making vegetable juices from the fresh leaves and buds of the marijuana plant, and from ingesting the highly potent cannabis oil. Smoking marijuana offers some relief from pain and other ailments, but the small amounts and cannabinoids gained from smoking marijuana only scratches the surface in treatment of ailments.

A woman was able to replace 40 medications she was on to treat her illnesses by drinking juices made from marijuana leaves and buds. Lindsay Bunn Rogers also cured her thyroid disease using cannabis oil.
