The World Cancer Research Fund International’s 7th Cancer Prevention Recommendation is people should limit their intake of salt and processed salty foods. Consumption of too much salt increases the risk of stomach cancer and also high blood pressure.

Daily intake of total salt should be no more than 6 grams a day, and 6 grams of salt a day is a little bit more than a teaspoon. Around eighty percent of the salt we consume comes from processed foods, so we should limit the consumption of salty foods and eat more foods inline with a whole food plant-based diet.

People may not be aware they are consuming a lot of salt because often the processed foods eaten don’t taste salty.

Cakes and breads contain large amounts of salt even though they don’t taste salty.

For example, nine slices of bread contain half of the daily recommended amount for salt and it is not difficult to consume nine slices of bread if you eat several sandwiches a day.
