Woman Dies From Salmonella Tainted Cucumber – Recall Underway

A 99-year-old woman, a source of nearly a century worth of information, died on August 17, 2015 from consuming a cucumber tainted with salmonella. San Diego County Health Officials said she was one of many people who had fallen ill due to salmonella infection.

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) issued a report on September 4, 2015 warning not to consume cucumbers distributed by Andrew & Williamson Fresh Produce because they were tainted with Salmonella serotype Poona.

The San Diego-based Andrew & Williamson Fresh Produce company imported the cucumbers from Rancho Don Juanito in Mexico, and the tainted cucumbers are responsible for killing one elderly woman and sickening people in 27 states.

285 people in were infected in those 27 states, and 51 of those people were from 17 counties in California. Illnesses are still being reported so the number of infected people will continue to rise.

The CDPH said:

“Symptoms of Salmonella infection include fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea which may be bloody. Most infected people recover within a week. Some may develop complications that require hospitalization. Infants, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are at highest risk for more severe illness.”

The CDPH has been working closely with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to assess and control the outbreak.

Andrew & Williamson Fresh Produce of San Diego has initiated a voluntary recall of the salmonella tainted cucumbers that were shipped in boxes marked as “Limited Edition” brand pole-grown cucumbers. Officials said it is likely the cucumbers will not have any labeling on store shelves.

The cucumbers were distributed between August 1 – September 3, 2015 in Alaska; Arizona; Arkansas; California; Colorado; Florida; Idaho; Illinois; Kansas; Kentucky; Louisiana; Minnesota; Mississippi; Montana; Nevada; New Jersey; New Mexico; Oklahoma; Oregon; South Carolina; Texas, and Utah.

The cucumbers have been reported to have been sold to Alberstons, In-And-Out, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Sam’s Club, Walmart, and Whole Foods.
